The case against relatable content

A manifesto for documentation that is real instead of performed.

Thesis

The creative industry has weaponized 'relatability' into a form of cultural violence, turning genuine human experience into content product. Real cultural documentation requires the courage to capture awkwardness, specificity, and unpolished truth instead of manufacturing moments designed to trigger recognition.

Stop asking 'Will teens relate to this?' Start asking 'Is this how teens actually live?' The gap between those two questions is where authenticity dies and where real cultural work begins.

Relatability is emotional exploitation disguised as empathy

Stock photography of 'diverse teens laughing with laptops' vs. actual screenshots of someone's 47 TikTok drafts they'll never post. One is designed to make you feel seen; the other actually sees you.

Authenticity cannot be manufactured, only documented

The difference between a Ring Light Selfie Setup and a ring light accidentally visible in the corner of a BeReal. Same object, completely different cultural meaning. One performs authenticity; one is accidentally authentic.

Specificity is the only path to universality

The moment when your Discord shows 'Last seen 3 minutes ago' while you're actively online but avoiding someone hits harder than any generic 'social anxiety' stock image ever could. Cultural truth lives in the details that can't be focus-grouped.

The aesthetic of real life is anti-aspirational

Teenage bedrooms with LED strips half-falling down, homework scattered on unmade beds, ring lights casting harsh shadows on tapestries from Amazon. This isn't Instagram-ready, but it's Instagram-real.

Embrace the accidental frame. The best cultural documents happen in periphery.

Honor the awkward moment. Discomfort is where truth lives.

Specificity over universality. Get the details right and the feeling follows.

Anti-aspirational is the new aspirational. Perfect is the enemy of real.

This isn't just about visual style, it's about respect. When brands manufacture 'relatable' content, they're saying 'we understand you' while proving they don't. Real cultural documentation requires humility: the artist/brand/creator disappears so the culture can speak for itself. This is the difference between anthropology and colonization.
